FRONT FROM THE TOP: "IC XC" Greek letters for
Jesus Christ. Icon of the face of Christ called "Made Without Hands" in the East and "Veronica's Veil" in the West. The central bas-relief
icon is of The Crucifixion. At the top the sign "INS" which was affixed to the Cross.
TOP OF THE ARMS OF THE CROSS: "IC XC" Greek letters for Jesus Christ.
FRONT FROM THE TOP: "NI KA" Greek for "Conquers". The two round balls on either side represent the Sun and the Moon, as Christ is the beginning and the end. The instruments of the passion are on either side of the corpus. Golgotha is at the bottom with the skull of Adam (our forefather) at the bottom.
VERSO - at the top Greek letters "MP OV" for the Theotokos or
Mother of God. Representation of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God. The Kazan Mother of God is sometimes referred to as the patroness of St Petersburg.
St Michael the Great Archangel, Defender of the Faith, is the center panel.
