What Is an Orthodox Icon?

An Orthodox icon is a sacred image used in the prayer and worship of the Orthodox Church. Icons most often depict our Lord Jesus Christ, the Theotokos (the Mother of God), angels, saints, or events from Holy Scripture and the life of the Church.

An icon is more than religious decoration. Its purpose is to direct the mind and heart toward the person or holy event represented. Orthodox Christians therefore treat icons with reverence while understanding that worship belongs to God alone.

Why do Orthodox Christians use icons?

The use of icons is closely connected with the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. The Son of God truly became man and entered visible human history. Because Christ took a real human body and could be seen, the Church teaches that He may also be represented in a sacred image.

Icons also remind Christians that the saints are alive in Christ. Their images are not substitutes for the saints themselves; rather, they help the faithful remember their lives, ask for their prayers, and follow their examples of faithfulness.

Why do icons look different from ordinary paintings?

Traditional Orthodox iconography follows established forms that developed over many centuries. The purpose is not simply to create a realistic portrait. Colors, gestures, inscriptions, clothing, and composition can all carry meaning. For this reason, an icon is intended to proclaim the Christian faith visually rather than merely reproduce the outward appearance of a person or event.

Where are icons used?

Icons are found throughout an Orthodox church, especially on the iconostasis and in places where the faithful can venerate them. Orthodox Christians also commonly keep icons in their homes, often arranging them in a prayer corner where the family can pray together.

Different Orthodox cultures developed distinctive artistic traditions, including Byzantine, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Romanian, and other styles. Their artistic appearance may vary, but their purpose within Orthodox Christian life remains the same.
