Can Non-Orthodox Visitors Attend an Orthodox Church?

Yes. Visitors are normally welcome to attend Orthodox Christian services, including the Divine Liturgy, Vespers, feast-day services, and many other public services.

Do I need to know the prayers? No. A first-time visitor may simply observe, listen, and follow the congregation as comfortably as possible. No one should feel required to imitate every gesture immediately.

May a visitor light candles or venerate icons? Visitors may generally light candles and may approach icons respectfully if they wish. These actions should be voluntary rather than performed from social pressure.

What about Holy Communion? Orthodox Eucharistic discipline normally reserves Holy Communion for Orthodox Christians who are properly prepared and in communion with the Church. Visitors should not approach the chalice unless specifically instructed by the priest.
