How to Create an Orthodox Prayer Corner at Home

Many Orthodox Christian homes have a designated place for prayer, often called a prayer corner or icon corner. It provides a consistent place where individuals and families can stand before God for morning, evening, and other prayers.

Choose a suitable place

A prayer corner does not need to be large or elaborate. A quiet, respectful location that can be used regularly is more important than its size. In some traditions an east-facing location is preferred when practical, but the physical layout of the home may determine what is possible.

Begin with Christ

An icon of Jesus Christ naturally has a central place. Many prayer corners also include an icon of the Theotokos and icons of patron saints or other saints especially meaningful to the household. A cross may also be included.

Prayer books and Holy Scripture

A Bible, prayer book, or other appropriate devotional texts can be kept nearby so that the prayer corner remains a place for actual prayer rather than simply a display of religious objects.

Candles and vigil lamps

Some families light a candle or vigil lamp while praying. Any open flame should be placed securely, kept away from flammable materials, and never left unattended.

Keep it simple

There is no need to fill the space with many objects immediately. A few appropriate icons and a regular habit of prayer are more valuable than an elaborate arrangement that is rarely used.

A place that serves prayer

The purpose of the prayer corner is not decoration. It creates a visible reminder that the Christian home is also a place of prayer and helps establish a regular rhythm of turning toward God.
