How Can You Identify Saints in Orthodox Icons?

Many Orthodox saints can be recognized by a combination of inscriptions and traditional visual characteristics. The most reliable clue is usually the saint's name written on the icon, but clothing, objects, gestures, and the composition can provide additional help.

Start with the inscription

Traditional Orthodox icons normally identify the person depicted. The name may be written in English, Greek, Church Slavonic, or another language. Older forms of spelling and abbreviated titles can make some inscriptions difficult for a modern viewer to recognize.

Look at the saint's clothing

Clothing often indicates a saint's role in the Church or society. Bishops may be shown in episcopal vestments, monks in monastic clothing, rulers in royal garments, and military saints in armor. These features narrow the possibilities but do not by themselves identify a particular person.

Notice what the saint is holding

A Gospel Book, scroll, cross, church building, medical object, weapon, or other item may provide a clue. Martyrs are often shown with a cross. Bishops and teachers may hold books. Some saints are associated with distinctive objects connected with their lives or ministries.

Facial appearance can follow tradition

Iconographic tradition often preserves recognizable features such as the shape and color of a saint's hair and beard. For widely depicted saints, these features can make identification easier even before the inscription is read.

Context matters

A saint may appear alone or as part of a larger scene. Other figures and events in the composition can help identify the subject. An icon of a feast, for example, may contain several saints whose identities become clear from the event being represented.

Do not rely on one feature alone

Different saints may wear similar clothing or hold similar objects. Artistic traditions also vary among regions and periods. For accurate identification, it is best to consider the inscription, clothing, objects, physical features, and overall composition together.

With familiarity, this visual language becomes easier to read, and recognizing the saints can deepen understanding of the history and spiritual meaning represented in Orthodox icons.
