Orthodox Baptism is first of all a Holy Mystery, not a gift-giving occasion. Nevertheless, several traditional gifts can have lasting spiritual meaning because they remain connected with the newly baptized person's Christian life.
Baptismal cross
A cross is traditionally placed around the neck after Baptism and can be worn throughout life as a sign of belonging to Christ.
Patron saint icon
An icon of the saint whose name the baptized person bears can become part of a home prayer corner and a lifelong reminder of that saint's example and prayers. Learn more in What Is a Patron Saint in Orthodox Christianity?
Baptismal candle
A candle is associated with the light of Christ and is used during the service. Depending on family and parish tradition, it may be specially decorated and kept afterward.
Other traditional gifts
Prayer books, children's Orthodox books, small icons, and other devotional items can also be appropriate. The most important consideration is not price: a meaningful baptismal gift should support or commemorate the Christian life begun in Holy Baptism.
