A godparent, or baptismal sponsor, has a spiritual role in Orthodox Baptism. The responsibility is more than standing beside the person during the ceremony or providing a baptismal gift.
What does a godparent do during Baptism?
When an infant is baptized, the sponsor makes important responses on the child's behalf, including the renunciation of evil and confession of faith. The godparent also participates in practical actions surrounding the service according to local parish custom.
What happens after Baptism?
The deeper responsibility begins after the ceremony. A godparent should encourage the baptized person in prayer, worship, participation in the Sacraments, and growth in Orthodox Christian life.
Does a godparent need to be Orthodox?
Because the sponsor speaks for the Orthodox faith, the principal sponsor is ordinarily expected to be an Orthodox Christian in good standing. Exact requirements should be confirmed with the parish priest.
Depending on local custom, a sponsor may provide a baptismal cross, candle, white garment, and an icon of the person's patron saint.
