What Happens During an Orthodox Church Service?

An Orthodox church service can feel unfamiliar to a first-time visitor because worship involves the whole person through prayer, movement, music, sacred images, incense, candles, and Scripture. Most of these elements are part of an ancient liturgical tradition.

Icons are everywhere

Orthodox churches are filled with sacred icons of Christ, the Theotokos, angels, saints, and events from the life of the Church. These images are venerated and help direct the faithful toward the persons and sacred events they represent.

Incense and candles

Incense is used during many services as a sign of prayer and honor. Candles may be lit as an offering of prayer. These actions are not decorative additions but part of the Church's symbolic and devotional language.

Chanting and sung prayer

Much of Orthodox worship is sung or chanted. Psalms, hymns, litanies, and responses may be offered by a choir, chanter, clergy, or congregation depending on local custom.

Why do people stand?

Standing is the traditional posture for much of Orthodox worship and expresses attention, reverence, and participation. In many parishes seating is available, especially for those who need it. Local practice varies.

Scripture is central

Orthodox services contain many quotations from the Bible, especially the Psalms. During the Divine Liturgy, readings from the Epistles and Gospels are proclaimed publicly.

Bowing and making the sign of the Cross

Worshippers frequently make the sign of the Cross and may bow at particular moments. These physical actions accompany prayer and are part of the Orthodox understanding that worship involves both body and soul.

Visitors are welcome

A visitor does not need to imitate every gesture. It is perfectly appropriate to observe respectfully, stand or sit as needed, and become familiar with the service gradually. Questions can usually be discussed with the priest or parish members after the service.
