The Divine Liturgy includes appointed readings from the New Testament, normally an Epistle reading followed by a Gospel reading. These readings vary according to the Church calendar.
Why are they read publicly? The proclamation of Scripture is part of the Church's worship and teaching. The congregation hears the apostolic witness and the words and works of Christ within the liturgical assembly.
Why is the Gospel treated with special reverence? The Gospel book represents the proclamation of Christ's good news and is carried, kissed, and read with particular honor.
For the service as a whole, see What Is the Divine Liturgy?.
