Holy Unction is the Mystery of anointing with blessed oil for healing of soul and body. The Church prays for God's mercy, forgiveness, strengthening, and healing according to His will.
Is Holy Unction only for someone who is dying?
No. Orthodox Holy Unction is not limited to the final moments of life. It is offered for healing and spiritual restoration. In many Orthodox parishes a communal service of Holy Unction is celebrated during Holy Week, although local practice varies.
Does the oil work like medicine or magic?
No. The blessed oil is a sacramental sign of God's mercy and healing. Orthodox Christianity does not treat it as a magical substance or as a replacement for appropriate medical care.
Does healing always mean physical recovery?
The Church prays confidently for healing while leaving the outcome to God. Healing may include bodily recovery, spiritual strengthening, reconciliation, forgiveness, courage, or peace in suffering.
Like Confession and the Eucharist, Holy Unction belongs within the broader sacramental and prayer life of the Church.
