One of the best-known Orthodox images of the Holy Trinity is based on the three visitors who appeared to Abraham in Genesis 18. The three angelic figures are shown together around a table.
Does the icon claim to portray God's divine essence? No. Orthodox iconography uses the biblical scene to point toward the mystery of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rather than attempting to depict the divine nature directly.
Why are the figures similar? Their harmony and unity help express the oneness of God while the three figures point toward the three Persons of the Trinity.
For the doctrine behind the image, see What Is the Holy Trinity?.
