Churching is a traditional Orthodox service of prayers associated with a mother and child returning to the church after childbirth. Its form and timing can vary among Orthodox traditions.
Is churching the same as Baptism? No. Churching and Baptism are distinct services, although practical scheduling can differ from parish to parish.
Why are there differences in practice? Orthodox customs developed in different local traditions, and pastoral circumstances also affect when and how the prayers are celebrated.
For the sacrament of initiation, see What Happens at an Orthodox Baptism?.
