Vespers is the principal evening service of the Orthodox Church. It begins the liturgical celebration of the new day and prepares the faithful for the feast or Sunday that follows.
Why does the Church day begin in the evening?
The pattern reflects the biblical rhythm of evening and morning and the ancient liturgical understanding that the new day begins with evening prayer.
What happens at Vespers?
The service includes Psalms, litanies, hymns, incense, and prayers connected with the day or feast. Light and darkness are used symbolically.
Is Vespers the same as the Divine Liturgy?
No. Vespers is an evening office of prayer, while the Divine Liturgy is the Eucharistic service of the Church.
