What Is the Patron Saint of an Orthodox Church?

Home » Patron Saint of a Church

Orthodox churches are commonly dedicated to Christ, the Theotokos, a major feast, an angel, or a saint. This dedication gives the parish a particular heavenly patron or sacred commemoration.

Does the patron replace Christ? No. Every Orthodox parish belongs to Christ. A saint's patronage expresses a relationship of prayer, example, and commemoration.

What is a patronal feast? The feast connected with the church's dedication is often celebrated with special solemnity.

Personal patronage is explained in What Is a Patron Saint?.
