What Is the Proskomedia in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy?

Home » What Is the Proskomedia?

The Proskomedia, or Service of Preparation, takes place before the public portion of the Divine Liturgy. The priest prepares the bread and wine that will be offered in the Eucharist.

What happens to the bread? Portions are taken from the prosphora and arranged on the diskos. The central portion, called the Lamb, is prepared for the Eucharist, while other particles commemorate the Theotokos, saints, and members of the Church.

Why are names submitted? In many parishes, Orthodox Christians give names of living and departed persons for liturgical commemoration. Local practice determines how names are submitted.

For the service that follows, see What Is the Divine Liturgy?.
