A spiritual father is an experienced priest, confessor, or monastic who provides pastoral guidance within Orthodox Christian life.
Is every parish priest automatically someone's spiritual father? Not necessarily in the same personal sense. Relationships of spiritual guidance develop differently according to parish life and need.
Does obedience mean giving up personal responsibility? Healthy guidance should lead toward maturity, repentance, and freedom in Christ, not dependence or loss of judgment.
The sacramental context is introduced in What Is Confession in the Orthodox Church?.
