Theophany is the Orthodox feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
Why is it called Theophany?
The name means manifestation of God. At Christ's Baptism, the Son stands in the Jordan, the Father's voice is heard, and the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove. The event is therefore a revelation of the Holy Trinity.
Why is water blessed?
The Great Blessing of Waters is a central part of the feast. Water becomes a sign of creation renewed and sanctified through Christ.
