Where Should Orthodox Icons Be Placed in the Home?

Orthodox Christians commonly keep sacred icons in their homes as part of daily prayer. Rather than treating icons simply as religious decoration, many families arrange them in a particular place where household members can pray regularly.

The home prayer corner

A group of icons set aside for prayer is often called an icon corner or prayer corner. It does not need to be elaborate. A small, clean, peaceful place with one or several icons can serve the purpose well.

Which icons should be included?

Icons of Jesus Christ and the Theotokos normally have a central place in an Orthodox prayer corner. Families may also include icons of their patron saints, guardian angel, favorite saints, or feasts that have particular significance to them.

Where in the room should icons be placed?

Traditionally, Orthodox Christians often pray facing east when practical, reflecting the ancient Christian symbolism of the East. For this reason an east-facing wall or corner may be chosen. However, the physical arrangement of a modern home does not always make this convenient. A suitable place that encourages regular and attentive prayer is more important than forcing an impractical arrangement.

Keep the area respectful and uncluttered

Because icons are sacred images, the prayer area should be treated respectfully. Some families place a cross, prayer book, vigil lamp, or candle nearby. If candles or oil lamps are used, ordinary fire-safety precautions are essential and they should never be left unattended.

Yes. Icons may be kept in bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, entrances, or other appropriate places. A household may have one principal prayer corner as well as individual icons elsewhere in the home.

There is no need to create an impressive display. A simple prayer corner that is actually used is more meaningful than a large collection arranged only for appearance. The purpose of icons in the Orthodox home is to turn the mind and heart toward Christ and to make prayer a natural part of everyday life.
