Saint George the Great Martyr is one of the best-known military saints of the Orthodox Church. He is honored for his courage and martyrdom for Christ during the persecutions of the early fourth century.
Why is he shown killing a dragon?
The famous dragon image comes from later Christian tradition and became a powerful symbol of the victory of faith over evil. It should not be confused with the historical details of George's martyrdom.
Why is he called a Great Martyr?
The title honors the severity of his witness and suffering. A martyr gives his or her life rather than deny Christ.
