Gold backgrounds are common in many Byzantine and Orthodox icons. Gold does not attempt to show an ordinary landscape or room; it creates a luminous visual field that points toward sacred reality.
Does gold represent heaven?
It can suggest divine glory, heavenly light, and the transfigured world of God's Kingdom. The icon is not trying to locate heaven as a physical golden place.
Why not use normal shadows and scenery?

Does real gold make an icon spiritually better?
No. Gold leaf affects craftsmanship and appearance, not the spiritual identity of the sacred person represented.
