Why Do Orthodox Christians Call Mary Theotokos?

Home » Orthodox Christian Knowledge » Orthodox Faith and Tradition » Why Do Orthodox Christians Call Mary Theotokos?

Theotokos is a Greek title commonly translated as Birthgiver of God or Mother of God. Orthodox Christians use it because the One Mary bore is Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God made human.

Does this mean Mary existed before God?

No. Mary is a created human being. The title primarily identifies her Son as truly divine.

Is Mary worshiped?

No. Orthodox Christians honor her uniquely among the saints, while worship belongs to God alone.
