Why Do Orthodox Christians Kiss Icons?

Kissing an icon is a traditional Orthodox Christian gesture of reverence, love, and respect. It may seem unfamiliar to someone visiting an Orthodox church for the first time, but the action is not understood as worshiping wood, paint, or another material object.

Honor is directed to the person represented

When an Orthodox Christian kisses an icon of Christ, the reverence is directed toward Christ. When venerating an icon of the Theotokos or a saint, the honor is directed toward the person depicted. The icon serves as a sacred image that points beyond itself.

Veneration and worship are different

Orthodox Christianity carefully distinguishes veneration from the worship that belongs to God alone. Saints are honored and asked for their prayers, but they are not worshiped as gods. The same distinction is essential for understanding the veneration of their icons.

Why use a kiss?

A kiss has long been a human expression of love, greeting, loyalty, and respect. Christians also encounter the language of a holy kiss in the New Testament. Within Orthodox worship, kissing an icon is one physical way of expressing reverence with the whole person, not merely with thoughts or words.

What does a person do when approaching an icon?

Practices can vary. A worshipper may make the sign of the Cross, bow, say a short prayer, and kiss the icon. The exact gesture is less important than approaching with faith and reverence.

Is everyone required to kiss icons?

Visitors should not feel pressured to imitate a practice they do not yet understand. Observing respectfully is entirely appropriate. For Orthodox Christians, however, venerating icons is a natural part of a larger tradition of prayer in which physical actions such as standing, bowing, making the sign of the Cross, lighting candles, and receiving blessings express the faith of the whole person.

Kissing an icon therefore makes sense within the broader Orthodox understanding that Christian worship involves both soul and body and that sacred images direct the faithful toward the persons and events they represent.
