Many traditional Orthodox churches were designed with substantial open floor space because standing is the customary posture for much of Orthodox worship. Seating was often limited to benches or stalls along the walls.
Do all Orthodox churches avoid pews? No. Many parishes, especially in North America and other modern settings, have pews or chairs. Architecture and local custom vary widely.
Must everyone stand for the entire service? No. People who are elderly, ill, pregnant, injured, or otherwise need to sit should do so. Parish practice is not meant to turn worship into a physical endurance test.
