Orthodox Christians make the Sign of the Cross as a bodily confession of Christian faith and as a prayerful invocation of the Holy Trinity and the saving work of Jesus Christ.
Why is it done so often? The gesture accompanies many prayers, blessings, entrances into church, veneration of sacred things, and important moments in worship and daily life.
Is the gesture itself magical? No. The Sign of the Cross is meaningful as an act of faith and prayer, not as a mechanical guarantee of protection or success.
For the symbolism of a familiar cross form, see Why Does the Orthodox Cross Have Three Bars?.
