Orthodox Christians often pray before icons because icons visibly place Christ, the Theotokos, angels, saints, and sacred events before the mind and heart.
Are Christians praying to the material object? No. Wood, paint, metal, or printed material is not treated as a deity. The icon directs attention beyond itself.
Can someone pray without an icon? Certainly. Icons assist prayer; they do not limit where or when a Christian can pray.
