An Akathist is a devotional hymn or service composed of a structured series of praises and prayers. The best-known example is the Akathist to the Theotokos, although many others exist.
What does the word mean? Akathist is commonly understood as meaning not sitting, reflecting the traditional practice of standing during the hymn.
Are all Akathists equally ancient? No. Some have deep historical roots, while others were composed much later.
