The Great Entrance is the solemn procession during the Divine Liturgy in which the prepared bread and wine are carried to the altar.
Why is it called great? It is distinguished from the earlier Little Entrance and marks an important transition toward the Eucharistic portion of the Liturgy.
What is being carried? The gifts of bread and wine prepared during the Proskomedia are carried with reverence before being placed on the altar.
The earlier procession is described in What Is the Little Entrance?.
