The Nativity Fast is the period of preparation before the feast of the Nativity of Christ. It combines fasting with prayer, repentance, worship, and acts of mercy.
Is the food rule identical every day? No. The traditional fasting discipline changes according to the day and local church calendar, and pastoral guidance may adapt the rule for health, age, or other circumstances.
What is the purpose? The goal is spiritual preparation for the coming feast, not simply dietary restriction.
For the broader purpose of fasting, see Why Do Orthodox Christians Fast?.
