The Betrothal is the first major portion of the traditional Orthodox wedding service. It includes prayers and the blessing and exchange of rings.
What do the rings signify? The rings express commitment, fidelity, and the mutual giving of the bride and groom to one another in marriage.
Is the Betrothal the same as the Crowning? No. In current parish practice the Betrothal and Crowning are commonly celebrated together, but they are distinct parts of the service.
The next major portion is explained in What Is the Crowning in an Orthodox Wedding?.
