An Orthodox prayer rope is a devotional aid traditionally made with knotted cord, although other forms also exist. It helps a person keep attention and count repeated short prayers.
What prayer is commonly used? The Jesus Prayer is especially associated with the prayer rope: a short invocation of Jesus Christ asking for mercy.
Is the prayer rope a magical object? No. Its value is practical and devotional. Orthodox prayer is directed to God; the rope simply helps establish attention and regularity.
