Orthros, commonly called Matins in English, is a major service of the Orthodox daily cycle. It is traditionally associated with the morning and includes psalms, hymns, readings, and prayers.
When is Orthros served? Parish practice varies. In many churches it is celebrated before the Divine Liturgy on Sundays and feast days; in other places parts of the daily cycle may be arranged differently.
Is Orthros the same as the Divine Liturgy? No. Orthros is a service of prayer and praise, while the Divine Liturgy includes the Eucharist.
For an evening service in the daily cycle, see What Is Vespers?.
