What Is Prosphora in the Orthodox Church?

Home » What Is Prosphora?

Prosphora is the leavened bread offered for use in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy. The singular form is prosphoron, a Greek word connected with offering.

Why is the bread stamped? A special seal marks portions used during the Proskomedia. The central seal commonly contains the Greek abbreviation IC XC NIKA, meaning Jesus Christ conquers.

Is all prosphora consecrated as Holy Communion? No. A specific portion is prepared as the Lamb for the Eucharist; other portions have different liturgical uses.

Its preparation is explained in What Is the Proskomedia?.
