Orthodox icons commonly depict angels with wings, although angels are understood as spiritual beings rather than biological creatures with feathered anatomy.
What do the wings mean? Wings visually express speed, heavenly service, freedom from ordinary earthly limitation, and readiness to carry out God's commands.
Why give spiritual beings visible form? Iconography uses symbolic forms rooted in Scripture, worship, and Christian artistic tradition.
